Indiana County Legislators Announce Grants for Local Projects
9/20/2022
HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania’s abundance of natural gas is again translating into support for a pair of Indiana County projects, according to state Rep. Jim Struzzi (R-Indiana) and Sen. Joe Pittman (R-41). The grants are products of the Marcellus Legacy Fund, part of Act 13 of 2012 which produced revenue derived from impact fees imposed on unconventional gas well drilling throughout the state.

“The goal of Act 13 was to strike a balance between requiring drillers to pay their fair share, while reimbursing municipalities for the impact drilling has on them and generating revenue that has been dispersed through the state so all Pennsylvanians can benefit from this tremendous natural resource,” said Struzzi.

More than 100 recipients were announced, including the Homer-Center Parks and Recreation Board, which is receiving a grant in excess of $104,000 for removal and replacement of the liner at the Homer City Pool.

“Facilities like this provide recreation and exercise for many people in the area but also require routine maintenance as any swimming pool owner knows,” Struzzi commented. “I’m glad we were able to secure this grant for the benefit of local residents who frequent the pool.”

White Township is also receiving a $100,000 grant to help fund construction of an amphitheater for its recreation complex, which township supervisors have been seeking to further develop.

“The White Township Recreation Complex offers numerous outdoor recreation opportunities, and this grant will help them expand those options to include an entertainment and arts center that also has other recreational and educational applications,” Pittman said. “This product, funded by the fees paid by natural gas producers, will generate economic benefit for not only the township, but the county as well.”

The grants are administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program.
