Indiana County Schools Awarded Safety Grants

May 1, 2019

HARRISBURG – Rep. Jim Struzzi (R-Indiana) today announced that school districts in Indiana County have been awarded $367,597 in grants via the School Safety and Security Grant Program. These funds will be used to create a safer learning environment for students, allowing them to learn to their full potential.

The school districts and their respective awards are as follows:

• Indiana Area School District - $140,331.
• Homer-Center School District - $100,044.
• United School District - $127,222.

“I am very happy to see these grants awarded to schools in Indiana County,” said Struzzi. “Educators cannot effectively teach, and students cannot effectively learn, if they don’t feel safe. That’s why these grants are so important.”
The School Safety and Security Grant Program was created by lawmakers last year to provide grants to school districts, intermediate units, area vocational-technical schools, charter schools and private residential rehabilitative institutions for a wide variety of projects to improve school safety.

Eligible uses for the grants include hiring school security officers, purchasing security-related technology, completing safety and security assessments, implementing violence prevention curricula, offering counseling services for students, and creating other programs to protect students.
